Canada ranks sixth out of 152 countries on the Fraser Institute’s Human Freedom Index, while the United States is way back in the number 20 spot.

76 indicators of personal, civil and economic freedoms are used to rank the countries.

The editor of the study, Fred McMahon, says the “intention is to measure the degree to which people are free to enjoy classic civil liberties, freedom of speech, religion, individual economic choice and association and assembly in each country surveyed.”

Canada scored better than the United States because it received better scores on security and safety, the rule of law and economic freedom which is based on personal choice, trade openness, freedom to compete, security of private property and judicial independence.

Hong Kong sits in the number one spot and McMahon says that’s because it received a high economic freedom score.

Iran is dead last on the index.
