Police are questioning a man in connection with the fatal hit and run of a 33-year-old Calgary woman on Monday night.

A woman was crossing Centre Street N. at 43 Avenue in a marked crosswalk at about 11:15 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle.

The driver fled the scene and witnesses found the woman in the road a short time later.

She was rushed to Foothills Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

"She was doing all the right things.  She was walking across the intersection," said CPS S/Sgt Paul Stacey. "It's well lit in this area she was in the crosswalk when she was struck there is absolutely no need for this whatsoever."

Family have identified the deceased woman as Farida Abdurahman and say she worked at the Peter Lougheed Centre in housekeeping.

Police located the vehicle, a silver Buick Regal, in an alley in the 6400 block of 4 Street N.E. a few hours later.

"It was found by one of our traffic investigators and that was based on some of the information that we were able to glean from the scene from all the debris that we were able to gather," said Stacey. "The key thing for us was to at least find the vehicle because once you find the vehicle then the trail gets a lot hotter after that.'

A person of interest, believed to be the driver, is being questioning in connection with the case.

Investigators are hoping witnesses will come forward to help them with their investigation.

“We’ve got no direct witnesses as far as I’m aware,” said Sgt. Colin Foster, with the CPS Traffic Unit. “How the collision came about, I’m still not clear myself. But, certainly, there were witnesses to the aftermath, shall we say, when we arrived.”

Police say they have spoken with the victim's family. "We have spoken to her family, they are pretty shaken up," said Staff Sergeant Paul Stacey with the CPS Traffic Unit. "There's other family that's come into town to support those living with her at the time. She was doing all the right things. No need for this whatsoever."

Officials say this is the fourth pedestrian fatality in 2015 and that three of those were hit and runs.

So far no charges have been laid.
