A 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man have been charged with second degree murder in connection to Sunday morning’s stabbing at a northwest apartment building that claimed the life of a man from Red Deer.

Early Sunday morning, emergency crews responded to the building in the 4000 block of 19 Street Northwest following reports of an altercation.

EMS transported an 18-year-old man, suffering from stab wounds to his torso, to hospital. The stabbing victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

A person of interest in connection to the stabbing was located by police near the Triwood residence and transported to CPS headquarters for questioning.

On Monday, the person of interest, a 17-year-old, was charged with second degree murder. The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A second suspect, 18-year-old Jessie Sky Copenace, was charged with second degree murder on Tuesday.

The stabbing victim has been identified as 18-year-old Levi Marance of Red Deer.

The executive director of the charitable organization that runs an affordable housing apartment building for young people in northwest Calgary, says the fatal Sunday morning stabbing of an 18-year-old man did not involve one of its residents.

In a statement released Monday, Soraya Saliba of McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association extended her sympathies to the family of the stabbing victim while adding the incident at McMan’s Triwood residence did not involve clients of the organization.

“The victim and alleged perpetrator of the crime have no connection with McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association,” said Saliba. “While this incident is an anomaly, our organization will examine all processes and procedures related to our residence and continue to improve programs and services.”

Saliba says the charitable organization is cooperating with the Calgary Police Service investigation into the homicide.
