It’s December in Alberta and most people here are not new to the drastic weather swings but even the hearty are heading inside to beat the cold.

The freezing conditions are making it a little harder to get around the city and buses and CTrains are experiencing some delays.

Taxi companies are also experiencing a heavy volume of calls and with holiday parties ramping up it may be even more difficult to hail a ride later in the evening.

Emergency officials are advising people to bundle up in layers if they are going outside.

Frostbite can occur quickly to exposed areas when temperatures are this cold.

Alberta's Health Link has some advise on how to handle frostbite and say feet, hands, ears, noses, and faces are the most vulnerable.

Flights are getting out on time at the Calgary International Airport but those who are coming in say they wish they hadn’t.

“We just about turned around and went back on the plane,” said one woman.

“I’m going home and I’m cranking up the oven and I’m making Christmas cookies to warm up the house,” said another.

“It’s just tough to go from 31 degrees and sunshine, then you come to this, it’s dark and cold and snowy so,” said one man returning from the tropics.

The Calgary Zoo has cancelled Zoolights for Friday night due to the extreme cold.

Organizers say the cancellation is in the interests of safety for guests and staff.

Pre-booked catered events will not be affected and will continue to run.

Environment Canada has issued a wind chill warning for the City of Calgary and many other areas in Southern Alberta.

Frigid temperatures and brisk winds created extreme wind chill values below - 40 early Friday morning.

The wind chills are expected to moderate in the afternoon, but could be back reach in the - 40s again overnight.
