Calgary police have confirmed Quincy Butler has been charged with two counts of common assault in connection to an alleged incident which occurred outside of Cowboys Casino early Thursday morning.

According to police, Butler entered a taxi at around 3:00 a.m. in the 400 block of 12 Ave. S.E. The cab driver asked Butler for a deposit which prompted Butler to exit the vehicle. Butler is alleged to have walked to the driver’s door and struck the driver several times.

An off-duty transit security officer witnessed the second of the alleged attacks.

“I was headed outside and I noticed a cab parked on the crosswalk,” said the transit officer who has asked to remain anonymous. “The cab driver seemed to be leaning on the hood.”

“I heard raised voices and I saw a gentleman that I know arguing with a larger gentleman. The larger gentleman had his shirt off and there seemed to be an altercation going on. I notified casino security and walked up the sidewalk to see what was going on.”

“When I got up to the two men arguing, the smaller man was accusing the larger male of assaulting the cab driver, punching him and knocking him to the ground and then kicking him in the head and knocking him out.”

Following the accusations, Butler is alleged to have responded by headbutting the smaller man in the face and throwing several punches.

“It was not a fair fight because the larger black male was ripped, he was in good conditioning. I intervened and grabbed the larger male and threw him. When he got up from the ground and started to come towards me, I told him he was under arrest.”

The transit officer says he feared retaliation but security officers appeared and the accused calmed down.

“Some casino security had come out and the gentleman said ‘Well, if I’m under arrest, I’m under arrest’.”

The transit officer said the cab driver appeared dazed following the attack and was bleeding from his head. The driver was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The second assault victim did not appear to suffer any injuries.

“It’s an unfortunate incident, especially if it was a member of the Stamps” said the transit officer. “I love the Stamps and I’m a huge fan and the organization does not need something like this going on.”

Police arrived at the scene and arrested Butler.

30-year-old Butler was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26, 2014.

Officials with Associated Cab confirmed the driver was transported to hospital but are unaware of the severity of the man’s injuries. Management has left messages with the driver but do not have an update on the driver’s condition.

A spokesperson with the Calgary Stampeders says they are aware of an ongoing police investigation involving a member of the Stamps. The team has launched its own internal investigation into Butler's actions.
