A woman who was hit while crossing the road in a marked crosswalk in northeast Calgary has died in hospital.

The 66-year-old woman was crossing Centre Street at 18 Avenue N.E. at about 6:40 p.m. when she was hit by a car being driven by a 71-year-old man.

The car, a red 1989 Ford Crown Victoria, was southbound on Centre Street when it struck the woman on the south side of the intersection.

The woman suffered grave injuries, including severe head trauma, as a result of the crash.

She was rushed to Foothills Medical Centre in life threatening condition, where she later died.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and police have determined that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the incident.

Police say that the crossing lights were functioning properly at the time of the crash and the victim was in the crosswalk at the time.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the driver of the sedan.
