Officials say that a woman was taken to hospital early Tuesday morning after she was hit by an SUV in northwest Calgary.

At about 6:23 a.m., EMS responded to the scene of Sherwood Boulevard and Sherwood Place N.W. for reports of a pedestrian crash.

Paramedics attending the scene found a 24-year-old woman in life threatening condition with internal injuries.

Police say the victim was crossing the road in an unmarked crosswalk when she was hit.

She was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre for treatment.

The driver of the vehicle, a Honda CR-V, a 37-year-old woman, remained at the scene.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Police shut down traffic briefly for their investigation.

The cause of the crash is not known and there is no word on charges.
