Police are investigating a serious crash on Deerfoot Trail that resulted in the death of a female driver on Thursday evening.

At about 8:00 p.m, emergency crews were called to the scene of a crash on Deerfoot Trail near the exit for Stony Trail.

Police say that a southbound Ford Mustang crossed the median directly into the path of a northbound Chevrolet Malibu.

The 67-year-old female driver of the Mustang died instantly in the crash and the 49-year-old woman driving the other vehicle was cut out of the wreckage. She was taken to Foothills Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

The crash closed Deerfoot Trail for several hours.

Police are looking into a cause but believe that a medical condition may have been to blame.
