Police are looking into the cause of a serious crash on Deerfoot Trail that claimed the life of a woman Wednesday night, but weather is likely to blame.
At approximately 9:45 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene of the crash just south of Stoney Trail and found two vehicles and a tractor trailer involved in the crash.
Officials say that a 44-year-old woman was northbound on the highway when she lost control of her vehicle, a 2002 BMW.
A tractor trailer, following the BMW crashed into the side of the car and then jackknifed.
A woman was taken from the scene to hospital where she later died.
There is no information on her identity at this time.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
Snow began falling at about 9:30 p.m. and conditions on the roads deteriorated rapidly, contributing to many minor crashes throughout the city.
From 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m., police were called to 113 crashes, with 15 of those involving injuries.
In another crash, at a gas station along 17 Avenue S.W., a driver plowed into a gas pump.
Emergency crews urge drivers to take it slowly and leave lots of space between vehicles while out driving.
Highways around Calgary are also in particularly snowy conditions, with heavy snowfall on the QEII between Calgary and Red Deer.
City crews, meanwhile, say that the main routes have been cleared but the biggest danger is from temperatures. We are hovering just above the freezing mark but that could change quickly, causing ice to develop on bridge decks and overpasses.
CTV Weather Specialist Kevin Stanfield says Calgary saw about one centimetre of snow overnight and into Thursday morning, but warmer temperatures are expected to melt all of that later in the day.
The weekend is a different story as we could see up to 10 cm of snow, so get the shovels ready.
