All of the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail at Peigan Trail are now open following a serious single vehicle crash on the high-traffic route through Calgary early Monday morning.

At just after 5:30, emergency crews were called to the scene of a single vehicle crash just south of Peigan Trail in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail.

Officials say the driver lost control on the Calf Robe Bridge as it neared Peigan Trail.

The car slid off the road, to the right, hitting a barrier and rolling over.

The vehicle sustained extensive damage in the crash.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 36-year-old woman, was taken to hospital in serious condition life-threatening condition, but she has since been upgraded to serious but stable condition.

Once the wreckage was loaded onto the back of a tow truck, crews were called in to clear up the debris left behind.

Traffic was shut down on the highway to one lane of traffic for about four hours on Monday morning.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash, but don't believe that alcohol is a factor.
