Authorities in Lethbridge have now charged a 17-year-old youth in connection with the savage sexual assault of a 45-year-old woman.

Lethbridge Regional Police say that early Sunday morning, a woman had been sexually assaulted and left seriously injured at a home in the 2100 block of Palm Road S.

Officers who attended the scene discovered that the woman was asleep at a relative’s home at approximately 4:30 a.m. when a male suspect entered the home through an unlocked patio door.

He attacked the woman, sexually assaulting her. The young man then dragged the victim outside where he continued to assault her, and then slit her throat before fleeing the scene.

The woman was transported immediately to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She remains in hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The suspect, an acquaintance of the woman’s family, was identified and found by police a short time later.

The offender, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with aggravated sexual assault, unlawful confinement, break, enter and commit sexual assault, and uttering threats.
