A new giraffe is making himself at home in the Calgary Zoo’s African Savannah exhibit.

Crosby is a two-year-old male Masai giraffe and comes from the Louisville Zoo.

The Calgary Zoo plans to introduce Crosby to Carrie, a 19-year-old female reticulated giraffe, and hopes he will eventually be her companion.

Crosby is currently being held in quarantine in the back of the giraffe area in the Savannah building and will remain there for the next month or so.

The Calgary Zoo is taking part in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) to try and bolster the captive population of the Masai giraffe.

There are currently fewer than 150 Masai giraffe in captivity in the world.

The Calgary Zoo has a long-standing history of contributing to the giraffe SSP with reticulated giraffes and 17 giraffes have been born at the zoo through the program.
