CALGARY -- Members of the Calgary Police Service are investigating an early morning shooting that left one person injured.

According to police, officers responded to the Holiday Inn location in the 1200 block of McKinnon Drive N.E., near the intersection of 16th Avenue and 19th Street, at around 5 a.m. following reports of shots fired.

A man suffering from a gunshot wound was found in the hotel’s lobby. Paramedics responded within minutes and transported him to hospital in non-life threatening condition.

It’s not known if the shooting occurred inside or outside of the building. There is no description of a suspect at this time and the search for an offender is ongoing.

Several officers and the canine unit secured the hotel’s perimeter and have deemed the area safe.

Detectives are speaking any potential witnesses in the area and are working with hotel staff to obtain surveillance footage.

The shooting is one of several that have occurred over the last month in Calgary, prompting the city’s Public Safety Task Force Committee to take a closer look at the increase in crime.

Chair of the committee and Ward 6 councillor, George Chahal, says the city needs to take a multi-faceted approach to dealing with gun violence.

"We have to look at the criminal code. We have to look at gun control, is it working? Is it not? What can we do?," said Chahal.

"Most importantly, it’s the prevention programs that are providing the most benefit to our municipality and then really going after the gun smugglers and the folks like gun manufacturers who put those guns on our streets."

The Public Safety Task Force Committee will be meeting at city hall Friday morning.

Anyone with information related to the shooting at the Holiday Inn Calgary Airport is asked to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 403-262-8477.
