An investigation is underway into the tragic death of a 5-year-old boy, who was found unresponsive in a wave pool at a Lethbridge hotel.
The child was from the Fort MacLeod-Brocket area.
Police and several other agencies are now investigating.
At the Ramada Hotel, the Mariners Cove Water Park and Wave Pool remains closed.
Shortly after 7:00pm Monday evening, EMS crews were called to the water park, after a child was found in the water, not breathing, and without a pulse.
Staff Sgt. Zealand Leavitt of Lethbridge Regional Police told CTV News, "CPR was initiated by lifeguards and EMS was contacted. The child was transported to Chinook Regional Hospital whereby further efforts were made to revive the child. All lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful. This incident is still under investigation."
The hotel bills its water park and wave pool as a unique and exciting attraction.
There are two, four-story water slides and a wave pool.
The entire facility takes 400,000 litres of water to operate.
A police spokesman says at least two lifeguards were on duty at the time.
According to police, members of the little boy's family were also present, although specific details, including the child's name, are not being released at this point.
The Ramada is one of 21 hotels across Canada owned by Fortis Properties.
The company's manager of corporate communications, Gail tucker, issued a brief statement saying, "Regrettably we confirm there has been a drowning incident at the hotel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. There is a police investigation underway."
Police say Alberta Health Services, Occupational Health and Safety and the medical examiners office are also involved in the investigation.
Volunteers from the victim-witness services unit are available to help the family and water park staff deal with the tragedy.
It's not known yet if a public fatality inquiry will be held into the death.
