Calgary police have apprehended two suspects and seized a .22 calibre rifle in connection to Saturday night gunshots in two northeast neighbourhoods.

Shortly before midnight, officers were called to locations in the communities of Temple and Monterey Park following reports of gunshots. Damaged vehicles were located in the 2800 block of Catalina Boulevard N.E. and the 100 block of Templeton Close N.E.

Witnesses indicated the shots had been fired by occupants of a dark coloured truck.

According to Calgary Police Service Staff Sergeant Jim Stinson, a total of five vehicles were struck by bullets and at least three citizens were threatened by the suspects with shots fired in the direction of the bystanders.

The suspect truck was located a short time later from the air while travelling along 68 St. N.E. near Abbeydale.

“HAWC (Helicopter Air Watch for Community) was deployed and HAWC was able to locate this vehicle,” said Stinson. “The troops swooped in and took custody of the accused.”

Police have not determined a motive in the shootings and it is not known if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Charges are pending against two men. Stinson expects the suspects will face charges related to firearms, the uttering of threats and damage to property.
