The investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by police at a southeast home on Tuesday continues and neighbours have identified him as 76-year-old Robert Crowle.
Police were called to a home on Sunmount Crescent S.E. at about 11:00 a.m. Tuesday by someone inside the residence.
An injured man in his 20s was found on the front lawn of the home by police and was taken to hospital by EMS.
Patrol officers heard something in the attached garage at the rear of the home and found a running vehicle with a hose attached.
A man who was outside the vehicle confronted police with a weapon and officers believed he was a suspect in the assault on the man who was found earlier.
Officers issued directions to the man but he moved towards them with a weapon.
“He advanced around the car towards the officers with what is believed to be a large, edged weapon,“ said Calgary Police Chief Roger Chaffin.
An eight-year member of the force fired on the man and he was declared dead at the scene.
Area residents and property records identified the man as Robert Crowle and neighbours say the injured man is his grandson.
They say Crowle was a kind man who recently had surgery on his head and that he may be suffering from mental health issues.
“I did see him last week and he did have some obvious sutures on his head so there had been some sort of surgery on his head,” said neighbour, Wendy Rudko.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the circumstances around the shooting, which is standard procedure whenever an officer discharges a weapon.
