Police say a man who died nearly two weeks after being seriously asaulted in a northeast Calgary parking lot may have known his attacker and a possible suspect has been identified.

Officers were on patrol about 2 p.m. on July 18 when they were flagged down by someone in the parking lot of a Safeway in the 3500 block of 32nd Avenue N.E.

A man was found near the gas bar at the south end of the Whitehorn Safeway parking lot suffering serious injuries.

Officer provided first aid and EMS were called. The man was rushed to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

Darrin Thomas Amond, 40, of Calgary, died on July 29.

An autopsy was completed on Tuesday, however the cause of death has not been released.

"At this time we don't have a motive for the assault," said homicide Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta.

"The victim and possible suspect may have been known to each other. Through CCTV we have identified a possible suspect. We have spoken to this person but we're a long ways away still from charges."

Police now want to speak with anyone who was in the area of the Whitehorn Safeway between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on July 18.
