When the royal couple visits Calgary next month the pair will walk tall in a brand new pair of cowboy boots made just for them.

The Alberta Boot Company has been given permission to make a pair of real cowboy boots as a gift for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

On Tuesday, the first stitches were sown into the exotic leather that was chosen especially for the royal couple.

The Alberta Boot Company was founded in 1978 by Clem Gerwing. Clem's son, Tim took over as manager in 1981.

The family still owns the company and recently moved from the downtown location, where they started, to a new facility off of Macleod Trail and 50th Ave S.W.

Clem Gerwing is 91-years-old now and has made boots for British royalty in the past.

He made boots for both Prince Charles and Prince Andrew at the Calgary Stampede back in 1977.

The boot company just received confirmation from the Alberta Protocol Office that the royal couple has accepted the gift.

Gerwing cut the leather on Monday and started stitching the pattern on Tuesday.

He says he's a bit worried about the fit as the only information he was given was the royals' European shoe sizes.

"We tried to get a drawing of their feet on a piece of paper absolutely nothing, you've got their sizes and that's what you make. The protocol office is going to take the boots to the hotel room there will be no contact and I think that's kind of sad," said Clem.

The boots will be two-toned and made from ostrich skin and kangaroo leather.

The company is Alberta's only western boot maker and makes about 10,000 pairs of boots per year.

They have made original creations for royalty, movie stars, entertainers, celebrities, athletes, public figures, religious leaders, and ordinary people from all over the world.
