CTV Calgary learned late Monday night that Brent Sutter will announce that he is stepping down as head coach of the News Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Sutter says he is stepping down for personal and family reasons.

The move further fuels rumours that Brent Sutter will return to Alberta to join his brother Darryl, who is currently the Calgary Flames general manager.

There has been some speculation that Daryl Sutter has been waiting to make a decision on his team's head coaching opening to see if Brent would be available.

The Flames have not filled the vacant post left by former head Coach Mike Keenan who was fired last month.

If Brent Sutter is to become a candidate for the position, the Flames would have to ask permission from New Jersey Devils' GM Lou Lamoriello to speak with him.

Lamoriello could let Sutter out of the final year of his contract by giving his permission.
