The Calgary parents of a journalist shot in Thailand are speaking out.

The shooting of Nelson Rand and a dramatic effort to pull him to safety was caught on tape and has been seen around the world today [Friday].

Nelson Rand works for France 24, a Paris-based news network, and was covering the anti-government protests in Bangkok.

Rand was caught in the crossfire and was shot three times.

Eventually he was escorted to safety, but his injuries were serious.

"He received a bullet in his wrist, one in his leg which tore open an artery and broke the leg, and the other in his abdomen. He was taken immediately to the hospital where we understand he had a four-hour operation and was placed on a ventilator coming out in the ICU, but as of now we understand he is off the ventilator and let's say reasonably stable condition," said Nelson Rand's father Serge Rand.

Rand is from Calgary, but has lived in Asia for the last decade, and even wrote a book about his experiences there.

Rand's parents say they hope to convince him to come home and recuperate before he returns to Thailand.
