Police expect to lay charges against the driver of an SUV who they believe ran a red light, crossed into the path of a pair of CTrains and was hit by one of them.

The crash happened near the City Hall LRT station and it brought the evening rush hour to a grinding halt.

Rescue crews spent an hour extricating the passenger of the SUV from the wreckage.

She was taken to hospital.

Police say that the driver of the SUV wasn’t hurt in the crash.

“The driver didn’t appear to have any injuries, the passenger had serious injuries but was stable at this time,” says Const. Peter Adria of the Calgary Police Service.

Passengers who witnessed the crash say a CTrain was pulling out of the station and then struck the vehicle head on.

“The other train was moving out of City Hall Station and then hit the truck and then the truck was pushed across to the front of our train,” says Arvindh Viswanathan.

Police don’t believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but that doesn’t rule out any charges.

One CTrain passenger was assessed by EMS but they were not injured.

CTrain service was back up and running just before 8 p.m.
