A man known to Calgary's Gang Unit is facing numerous charges after an incident on Monday night.

Among the list of charges Kevin Edward Brown, 27, is facing is assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon

The charges stem from an incident which happened in the Boston Pizza parking lot in the 8100 block of Beddington Boulevard N.W., around 8 p.m. on Monday.

Witnesses say a man was assaulting a 16-year-old youth.

One of the men involved is well known to the Gang Unit but police say the fight was not gang related. "There is nothing to indicate that this was a melee between rival gangs or gang members...the victim and suspect are acquaintances and known to one another," says Sgt. Asif Rashid from the Calgary Police Service.

Good Samaritans tried to stop the altercation but the suspect and victim got into a vehicle and drove away.

Police caught up with the vehicle and pulled it over.

Officers on the scene say there was a struggle and an officer was assaulted during the arrest. "One of the officers was assaulted, he was punched several times in his head and face area," says Sgt. Rashid.

Inside the vehicle police allegedly found a shotgun and 20 rounds of ammunition.

A loaded handgun, which police say can be connected to the incident, was also found nearby.

Mindy Jennifer Symington, 21, is also facing several weapon possession charges.

Both Symington and Brown are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
