CALGARY -- Members of the Calgary police Homicide Unit are asking for help from the public as they investigate the death of a 21-month-old girl at a day home in Deer Ridge earlier this year.

Paramedics were called to a home at 271 Deerview Drive S.E. on June 28 for reports of an unresponsive child.

The child wasn't breathing when emergency crews arrived and she was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Investigators would now like to speak with anyone who had a child being cared for at the day home, prior to June 28.

The day home was open "for a number of months," said Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm, and police estimate there could have been between 20 and 40 children cared for during that time.

"We're looking for anybody who had a child in the day home, information in relation to the day home provider, if they had any concerns with the day home provider," he said.

"If they had any experience with the day home provider at all, we would like to hear about it, positive or negative."

The day home operator -- who was unlicenced and is no longer operating -- no longer resides at the address.

Chisholm said investigators initially didn't have concerns about the death.

"A week or two after (the child's death), somebody came forward with some information in relation to the day home and the day home provider which caused us some concern, therefore we continued our investigation," said Chisholm.

"And we have continued our investigation since that time."

Chisholm would not elaborate on what information was provided to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
