A historic Calgary church is celebrating a significant anniversary.

The first mass at Sacred Heart church was held on this day one hundred years ago.

The milestone is recognized by Pope Benedict, who sent a congratulatory letter.

The church began in a small wooden structure back in 1910, but during the great depression, it was replaced with this larger brick building.

Sacred Heart says it's laying the foundation for another 100 years.

It's adding on a larger entrance to the church, and also a columbarium, with a construction price tag of more than four million dollars.
