Coaldale man charged with attempted murder after Lethbridge break-and-enter

Lethbridge police say a 28-year-old man is facing charges of attempted murder following a frightening attack on a woman inside her home this week.

At 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 10, police were called to a home in the 200 block of Mayor Magrath Drive North after a man attacked a 27-year-old woman.

Officials say the man gained access to the home through an open window, then attacked the victim, who was asleep at the time.

He bludgeoned her with an object, leaving her with serious head injuries before fleeing.

She was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment.

Police tracked down and arrested a suspect after obtaining security video, which helped identify him.

Corbin John Maxwell was arrested on Thursday without incident.

Acting Insp. Pete Christos with the Lethbridge Police Service said the attack was a random crime.

"While acts of random violence remain rare, the opportunistic nature of this crime, coupled with the emotion and physical harm inflicted on the victim is deeply troubling."

However, since the suspect was "quickly taken into custody," there is no risk to public safety.

Maxwell is charged with attempted murder and housebreaking with intent.

Christos said Maxwell is known to police for "concerning behaviours."

"Not to this level though," he said, adding he wasn't sure if there were any other charges laid against him in the past.

Christos said crimes like these are important reminders to the public to ensure their properties are secured properly.

"Good lighting is always an option. Cameras are great deterrent as well," he said.

"We know it's a hot summer and windows are left open but make sure you have measures in place.

"People need to be looking out for each other in the community and if something seems like people don't belong, then make sure you make others aware."

Christos said the victim has been released from hospital and is staying elsewhere for the time being.

Maxwell is expected in court on Sept. 17.
