One of the most controversial public infrastructure projects in Calgary's history has been given the green light.

The city's planning commission voted to approve the 22 million dollar project Thursday night.

The Peace Bridge has been designed by international architect Santiago Calatrava.

It will be built west of Prince's Island and connect communities on the north side of the river to the downtown core.

The city estimates five thousand people will use the bridge every day.

But those opposed to the project say it is unnecessary and too expensive.
