The man who was arrested in connection with a fraud scheme in Calgary was found severely beaten in his cell at the Remand Centre.

Kristopher Cook was found inside his cell at the facility and officials believe he was attacked sometime on Sunday night.

He was brought to hospital suffering from a lacerated spleen, broken nose, and a chipped tooth.

Cook allegedly bilked thousands of dollars from a number of patrons of a Calgary bar because of a fraudulent cancer fundraiser in July.

He was found and arrested in Victoria and then brought back to Calgary over the weekend.

Police are investigating the attack.
