There are only a handful of Tesla vehicles on the road in Calgary but the premium battery powered rides are becoming popular with car enthusiasts around the world.

Tesla Motors was founded by a group of Silicon Valley engineers in 2003 who wanted to create an elegant, emissions-free, electric vehicle.

The first vehicles hit streets in 2008 and since then thousands of the cars have been snapped up by drivers around the world.

The vehicles utilize a powerful row of batteries for fuel and can be charged overnight for about $7 worth of power.

A full battery gives the car a range of about 350 kilometres and has a single speed gear box so a clutch is not necessary.

The company claims that the driving efficiency of the Roadster is 88% compared to 20-25 % for traditional gas-powered vehicles.

The vehicles also feature a large touch screen and fold away rumble seat for kids under ten.

The cars retail for between $70 000 and $100,000 and can be ordered online.

Delivery takes a couple of months and if there are any problems the company will send a qualified Tesla mechanic right to your door.

Consumer Reports says the Tesla is the best car it has ever tested.
