The driver of a car hit and killed a cougar on a road west of Calgary.

It happened around 8:45 p.m. on Monday near Springbank Road and Hansen Road.

Jeff Jansen was following the vehicle that hit the animal. "We got right out and saw it, everyone said it was still alive and they said be careful but it wasn't alive," says Jansen.

Fish and wildlife officers say the cougar was a full-grown male and was likely hunting when he crossed the road into an oncoming car. "We have a healthy population of cougars all the way along the eastern slopes of the mountains and cougars follow prey, whether it's coyotes, beaver or deer," says Ken MacKay.

MacKay says most people will never see a cougar even if they live in an area where they regularly roam.
