The new school year may still be awhile away, the City of Calgary council is going to be looking at several things that could improve safety for students.

Among the recommendations heading to council is a proposals to change school zone times from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., new signage marking those zones, and an education campaign to be rolled out by September 1.

Concerning school buses themselves, administration will be looking again at a bylaw to permit buses to use flashing lights.

Currently, school buses in Calgary do not need to use flashing lights within city limits when picking up or dropping off kids. A city committee is recommending that administration take another look at this issue and think about amending the bylaw.

They also want to work to improve school bus safety and make sure that the pick-up and drop off locations are safe for all students.
