City council is looking into a proposal that would see more enforcers on the streets to crack down on speeders in residential areas.

Ward 12 Councillor Shane Keating wants Calgary bylaw officers to have the ability to issue speeding tickets in Calgary communities.

Keating says the one year pilot project would use bylaw officers with Calgary Transit or Bylaw Services with Level One peace officer status to focus on residential traffic enforcement.

He says the revenue generated from the tickets would go to specific areas like paying for the officers, improving pedestrian crossings and speed limit signs, new playgrounds, and driver education programs.

Last year, playground and school zone hours were increased and at the time, officials said permanent photo radar locations were being considered in many areas.

Using police cadets to perform traffic enforcement was considered during last November’s civic budget and Keating it's certainly an option.

"We need a dedicated force that looks after residential areas as it is. Presently what happens is if there's a higher priority call, they have to leave. So whether it's a cadet program, whether it's a peace officer program, I'm not too concerned at this point," he said.

Between 2008 and 2012, there were nearly 4,000 crashes in residential areas resulting in almost 200 injuries and one death.
