The services of the Calgary Police Service’s victim assistance support team are being offered to residents of a northeast neighbourhood following Tuesday’s police response where an officer was shot, a garage was set ablaze and a suspect was found dead.

“It is completely normal to be shaken by a major event like yesterday, especially if you were asked to stay in your basement or witnessed what happened,” said Sgt. Andrea Koolick of the CPS victim’s assistance unit in a statement released Wednesday. “If you are finding it difficult to manage your emotions or have noticed a sudden change in your behaviour after the stress of yesterday, we would like to help you.”

The support team, comprised of highly-trained volunteers, attempts to address the lasting impact on victims following a crime or tragedy by providing information and guidance free of charge.  The identities of those who participate in the program remain confidential and the unit offers referrals to other organizations when specialized support is required.

The victim assistance support team may be reached at 403-482-8398 or 1-888-327-7828 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday, or 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays.

Outside of the victim assistance support team’s hours of operation, people in need of support are encouraged to contact Distress Centre Calgary, a 24-hour service, at 403-266-HELP (4357).
