Several buildings were evacuated on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a southeast industrial area.

Crews were called to the two-alarm blaze in the 4200 block of Brandon St. S.E. at about 12:45 p.m.

Thick black smoke could be seen for several kilometres and the building was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

There are six businesses in the complex but the fire was mostly contained to PD McLaren, which supplies fluids to a number of industries.

One man was inside at the time of the fire and managed to escape with minor injuries.

"It's all different, and it's all under investigation. There's a lot of different stuff in there," said CFD Acting Battalion Chief Bill Daniel, "The configuration of the businesses itself caused us some problems getting to the scene of the fire."

CFD investigators are looking into the cause.
