Fire crews are finally getting to the heart of a fire burning at a metal recycling facility in the city's southeast.

Various agencies are involved in fighting the fire that has been smouldering at Calgary Metal Recycling at 3415 Ogden Road S.E. since the end of April.

Officials say they have made progress on two fronts: completing the transfer of cooled material away from the involved areas and significant suppression efforts on portions of the main fire.

Crews have removed the cooled materials and firefighters can now move on to exposing the hottest portions of the pile and drenching it with water.

Officials say they hope to reach the hottest part of the pile sometime on Tuesday.

The city says smoke conditions may vary with wind patterns and weather conditions and air quality will continue to be monitored to ensure public health is not at risk.

Ogden Road S.E. from Bonnybrook Road S.E. to 38 Street S.E. remains closed to traffic and pedestrians but there is access for local businesses.

Transit route detours for Routes 24 and 302 also remain in effect.

Anyone who may be experiencing odour-related irritation (particularly of the nose, eyes and throat) can get more information from the Alberta Health Services website on managing fire-odour irritations.
