The defence for Emil and Rodica Radita presented closing arguments on Friday in the death of their son from starvation and untreated diabetes.

The pair is on trial for first-degree murder, and court viewed video of Alex Radita on Thursday that was taken just months before he died in 2013. It shows the 15-year-old looking thin and frail as he opened birthday presents. He weighed only 37 pounds when he died.

In its closing arguments, the Crown stated that “Alex was doomed and trapped by the two people with the power to save him.”

Witnesses testified that the Radita’s refused to believe their son had diabetes or get him any treatment, even though he had been hospitalized for the illness in the past and had been removed from his parent’s custody at one point.

Alex was one of the Radita's eight children.

The justice in the case has decided to reserve her decision and will set a date on October 28, 2016.
