Demand for flu shot continues

Calgarians are lining up for flu shots and many people who tried to get them at pharmacies over the weekend were turned away because they were out of stock.

The number of flu cases in the province is steadily climbing and many people are rushing to get immunized.

Two immunization clinics have been set up in the city and physicians and pharmacies are also able to administer the shot.

On the weekend, several pharmacies ran out of the shots and some say new supplies are hard to come by.

"Even in the original orders they said you may not get your full order because we want to make sure everybody gets an order," said Olga Dmytrisin, Pharmacist.

The province's Chief Medical Officer of Health says they place the vaccine order each February based on what they think they will need and the hold up right now is assessing where it is needed most.

Dr. Talbot says that ten deaths have been linked to the flu in Alberta this season and the latest happened within the last 24 hours. The victims range in age from 18 to 64 and some had underlying medical conditions.

Those planning to visit their doctor or pharmacist for the shot are encouraged to call ahead to make sure it is available.

Flu shot clinics will resume on Tuesday and wait times are expected to be a couple of hours.
