The driver of a pickup truck was taken to hospital in serious condition after his vehicle collided with a utility truck on Highway 22 on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called the highway south of the Trans-Canada at about 3:20 p.m. for reports of a crash between two trucks.

EMS says the driver of the larger truck was uninjured but a man in his 20s, who was driving the smaller truck, was taken to Foothills Hospital in serious but stable condition.

A dog was also in the pickup at the time of the crash and had to be extricated by fire crews.

“His dog was actually physically trapped within the vehicle so we’ve just spent the last 10 to 15 minutes extricating the dog. The dog is awake but it’s clearly injured so we’re just trying to arrange for a vet or someone to come and collect it,” said Gary Barnett, District Chief for Rocky View County.

RCMP remain on scene investigating the crash and say Highway 22 north and southbound is currently closed from Highway 1 to Highway 8.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
