A 25-year old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after the car she was driving was hit by a CTrain.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. Sunday morning at 7th Avenue and Macleod Trail SE.

Police say the woman was northbound on Macleod Trail when she ran a red light, causing the train to crash into the passenger side door of her car.

The car was heavily damaged and the woman, who was the only person in the car, suffered life-threatening head and chest injuries.

No one on the three car CTrain was hurt in the crash.

Northbound Macleod Trail was closed for several hours near the crash site and traffic was rerouted.

The train and car were off the tracks and Macleod Trail was reopened around 1:30 p.m.

The investigation continues.
