Fire officials say that a total of five homes have been damaged in a large fire that broke out on Friday afternoon in the northeast community of Monterey Park.

Crews were called to the scene, in the 0-100 block of Los Alamos Crescent N.E. at about 1:00 p.m. for reports of a house on fire.

When they arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from a one home that was already spreading to a second and third on the street.

Crews began an immediate aggressive attack on the source home, but were unable to save any of the three homes on fire.

"We had a total of five houses affected today," said CFD Battalion Chief Harley Spate. "Two of them have damage from the heat, which would be the melted siding that you see, the other ones have sustained major damage from a result of the fire and they will not be occupied at this time."

Spate said the smoke and flames weren't the only challenge for crews, especially with the record temperatures that Calgary experienced on Friday.

"As a result of that, we rotate crews very, very regularly. They'll go through one tank of air, they'll go through our rehab centre, they'll be taken out and another crew will come in just so we know everybody will be safe."

Residents of one home knocked on their neighbours’ doors to let alert them so they could get outside to safety.

“I thought it was crazy people who came to knock on the door.  I opened the door and my neighbour was there she was crying she said call 9-1-1 but I didn’t have my phone and by the time I go grab my phone and my key the house was on fire,” says Nazir Qurbani.

A transit bus was brought in to shelter residents who have been impacted by the fire. No one was injured.

Some residents told CTV Calgary at the scene that the fire response was too slow but Spate saiid he can't speak with any specificity about response times without having more information available.

"If they have a concern, they can certainly call the fire department and we'll investigate that."

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate is still being worked out and investigators are expected to be on scene throughout the night.
