An escaped inmate, who had been on the run since Thursday evening,  is back in custody following his arrest in a southwest Calgary neighbourhood.

According to RCMP, Dean Leonard McClelland was reported missing from the Bowden Institution after officials discovered his disappearance during an inmate head count.

Calgary police say McClelland came to Calgary to try and contact family and friends.

On Saturday, officers tracked McClelland to the northwest community of Bowness where they located a vehicle they believed he had been driving.

On Saturday evening, a tip from the public led police to a southwest neighbourhood where McClelland was located in the backyard of a home. McClelland was taken into custody without incident.

46-year-old McClelland has been transferred back to Correctional Services Canada.

Details on McClelland's escape have not been released and the incident is being investigated. Bowden Institution is a Minimum Security Annex located along the QEII Highway.

McClelland was serving a sentence of just over three years and eight months for several charges including criminal harassment, mischief and arson.
