The Calgary Police Service continues its investigation into Tuesday’s night rollover in the northeast that claimed the life of a teenage girl and sent the other occupants of the SUV to hospital in critical, life threatening condition.
Shortly before 5:00 p.m., a Jeep Liberty was travelling westbound on McKnight Boulevard, east of 68 Street northeast, when the vehicle began to rotate through the centre median and into the eastbound lanes of the round.
The three occupants of the SUV were ejected from the vehicle.
A 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased has been identified as Meghan Bomford, a Grade 12 student who attended Crescent Heights High School.
The driver of the vehicle, 50-year-old Shaun Bomford, and Kelsey Nelson, a 16-year-old girl who had been seated in the backseat of the SUV, were transported to the Foothills Medical Centre by ground ambulance in life threatening condition.
According to Lisa Dawn, Meghan Bomford's mother, the two teenage girls were receiving a ride on Tuesday night to get their police information checks in order to become junior ringette coaches.
The road was closed for several hours following the single vehicle crash. According to police, the Jeep Liberty was likely speeding and it’s believed the driver had been drinking.
Lisa Dawn released the following statement on Wednesday.
“The loss of our dear sweet Meghan has ripped a hole in the heart of our family and an entire community. She was always a firecracker and lived life on her terms. She had a soft spot for any furry animals and always wanting to adopt any she found. She loved her friends and ringette more than anything else and I know all the ringette communities are in pain right now.
“Please remember Meghan for everything she left on this earth the short time she was here. Her love, compassion, trying to find the longest yeah boy, her impressive Snapchat streaks, eating breakfast at Denny's with friends, roasting friends and family at dinner and being the most amazing young woman and daughter.
“Meghan's favourite movie was Peter Pan. She's in never land now.“
The Calgary Board of Education has deployed grief councillors to Crescent Heights High School to assist students and faculty members.
“It’s kind of sad in school today,” Trinity Bickford, a Grade 11 student who is friends with Kelsey Nelson. “Everyone’s in tears.”
"You see people everywhere just giving each other's hugs," said Jordan Bay, a Grade 12 student, "It's terrible."
As of Wednesday afternoon, the survivors of the crash remain in hospital and their respective conditions have not changed.
