A Thursday morning crash on the Trans-Canada Highway has claimed one life.

The crash occurred at 10:00 a.m., at a location east of Scott Lake Hill and approximately 10 km west of the Highway 22 overpass.

According to Cochrane RCMP, the driver of a westbound GMC Envoy, a 72-year-old man from Fort Macelod, lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes of traffic.  The Envoy collided with two eastbound vans, one of which was a Sheriff Prisoner Transport vehicle.

The passenger in the Envoy, the driver's 69-year-old wife, was pronounced dead on the scene.

STARS transported the Envoy driver in stable, non-life threatening conditon to Foothills Hospital.

Two Sheriffs suffered injuries in the collision and were transported by ground EMS to hospital in stable condition.

The identities of those involved have not been released as RCMP attempt to contact the next of kin.
