Memorial Drive was the scene of a massive blaze on Saturday night.

Among the emergency personnel were a special duo, a father and son, who were called to the scene to perform very different tasks.

It's the largest fire in Calgary in recent months, a three-alarm blaze that destroys an apartment building, and forces the evacuation of nearby residents.

Among the fifty firefighters is Tyler Williams. He's been with the department for just a year. He attacks the flames and heat alongside veteran firefighters. "It's nice to know going into something like this that those guys have your back."

This is the biggest blaze Tyler has ever been called to.

The drama unfolds under the watchful eye of his father, the Calgary Police Incident Commander, Duty Inspector Rob Williams. "I knew it was him, he was all geared up with his mask on, but just that wave that he gives. You know your own kid's wave that was kind of neat."

This is the first time they've responded to a call together, as father-son, cop and firefighter.

Tyler says they are both busy with their jobs. "I haven't seen too much of him. He's been off doing command and stuff, and I've been off with the crews, but it's really neat. It's cool to see him on the grounds here while we're both together."

Police evacuate the area, block off streets, and move bystanders back because of thick smoke.

Firefighters battle a blaze so intense, paramedics monitor them between shifts.

Inspector Williams is more proud of his son than he is concerned for his safety. "It was interesting to see them go right into the ground zero of the fire, and then we did our extreme good job of getting people evacuated from the nearby buildings."

Even though they're father-son, there's a hint of that age old rivalry between cops and firefighters.

Tyler smiles when he says, "Police are doing a good job too, blocking off the streets keeping their command. They're doing good."

"I razz him about getting issued a pillow and blankets and things like that", says Rob.
