The efforts of members of the Calgary Fire Department prevented an early morning fire in a southeast industrial area from damaging neighbouring warehouses.

Crews were called to Silk Plant Warehouse in the 6100 block of Centre Street South early Wednesday morning.

“The call came in just after 4:00 this morning by a passerby reporting lots of flames, smoke showing, very visible flames,” said Battalion Chief Alistair Robin. “Crews arrived quickly and were able to identify from both the front and backside of the building where the fire was and had a very quick knockdown.”

According to Robin, the fire was situated in a storage area between two buildings.

“The fact that both buildings are cinderblock was very beneficial in terms of no fire spread into either of the warehouses and crews are now working to overhaul and put out hotspots where it looks like the fire originated.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries have been reported.
