Calgary fire crews have managed to quickly extinguish a fire in a burning building that was first thought to have contained fireworks.

The building, located at 77 St. S.E. in an open field near the Calgary community of Copperfield, turned out to be empty.

When crews arrived, they could see flames and smoke coming from the building.

It didn’t take them long to get it under control.

“Crews did a quick knock down and discovered when they did the searches, that the shed was empty – there was nothing in it,” said Fred Rogi, Acting Battalion Chief. “First reports were that it was owned by a fireworks factory, but it’s been abandoned for nine years now.”

Crews are investigating the cause.

The north end of the building sustained severe damage and they hope to demolish the building later on Wednesday.

No one was injured in the fire and fire officials say there was no need to evacuate any homes.
