An early morning fire in a new northwest development left three homes significantly damaged but the efforts of the Calgary Fire Department prevented the wind fueled blaze from claiming additional buildings.

At roughly 2:45 a.m., fire crews responded to Sage Bluff Link Northwest, near Shaganappi Trail, after reports of a fire. On arrival, firefighters encountered three homes, in the midst of construction, engulfed in flames. The first attending crew immediately requested additional CFD resources as strong wind carried burning embers towards neighbouring houses.

Firefighters successfully contained the fire to the initial three unoccupied homes and extinguished the blaze.

One firefighter was transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of an injury to his lower leg.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
