Calgarians were invited to tour four of the city’s fire stations on Saturday afternoon to view the halls and receive tips on fire safety and prevention.

“The kids love the trucks but what we want people to walk away with is the message of home fire safety and safe cooking in the kitchen,” says Carol Henke, Calgary Fire Department Public Information Officer.

The open houses are a precursor to Fire Prevention Week which runs from October 6 – 12. The theme for this year’s events, which occur across North America, is ‘Preventing Kitchen Fires’.

In 2012, the Calgary Fire Department responded to more than 1,800 fires in the city, nearly 40 per cent of which originated in the kitchens of homes, condos or apartments during meal preparation.

Events scheduled for Fire Prevention Week include the naming of a Junior Fire Chief for a Day and a Smoke Alarm Blitz where fire crews inspect alarms in selected homes.
