Supporters of a young Calgary boy who suffered severe brain damage in an incident five years ago held a fundraiser to help his family on Saturday.

Nicholas Kitzul, a student at Bearspaw School, was in the school bathroom when the hall pass lanyard he was wearing got caught on a door and ended up choking him.

Kitzul, who was eight years old at the time, had his oxygen cut off for 10 minutes.

The boy’s parents have since spent tens of thousands on helping cure his brain damage, including some experimental treatments only available in the United States.

His parents say the rehabilitation is working and the funds will help Nicholas’ recovery greatly.

“He’s been able to move his legs, he started training his walking in that and once he started walking on his own and there are no words to explain. It is very exciting at the progress that he’s making and we want to continue that so someday soon he can walk all by himself,” said his mother Kamila Kitzul.

Nicholas has only just come back from the U.S. where he received a stem cell transplant. It takes a couple months for doctors to see the results of that procedure.
