Emergency crews are at the scene of a gas leak in the 200 block of 11 Street NW and are advising people to avoid the area.

Calgary police say a gas line is damaged and that 19 homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Crews have shut off the gas to about 400 homes in the area and have activated the Municipal Emergency Plan.

Police have closed roads between 10 Street and 14 Street and 5 Avenue to Kensington Road N.W.

A perimeter has been established around the area to ensure the safety of residents.

If you are a resident in this area and you are in your home, you must take the following steps:

  1. Turn off all fans and furnaces in your home.
  2. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
  3. Do not leave your home.

Officials say that people should not attempt to enter the area.
