A 25-year-old man from Gleichen, Alberta has been arrested and charged in connection with Wednesday morning’s death in the southeast community of Forest Lawn.

Shortly before 6:00 a.m. September 30, officers responded to the 2600 block of 43 Street Southeast following reports a dead body had been located.

An autopsy determined 34-year-old Jonathan Joe Schmeikal had died as a result of a gunshot.

“They were known to each other,” explained Staff Sergeant Doug Andrus of the Calgary Police Service homicide unit. “Prior to the shooting, the victim was being driven around in a stolen motor vehicle by more than one individual."

“We believe he was shot several hours prior to being found,” said Andrus. “Shot in the vicinity of where he was found and then he was removed from the vehicle and left at that location.”

Police have recovered the stolen vehicle and several weapons. The CPS forensics and ballistics units are investigating.

Andrus says Schmeikal had been a resident of the neighbourhood where he was found but had moved away approximately three weeks before the fatal shooting.

On Tuesday, in connection with Schmeikal’s death, police arrested Jerry Cody Goodeagle, 25, of Gleichen as well as two unidentified individuals at an undisclosed location in south Calgary.

According to Andrus, there is a possibility a second individual will be charged.

Goodeagle has been charged with second degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on October 15, 2015.
